Hans in Luck

Hans, a young boy from a small village in the rolling hills of Germany, loved to help his father on their farm. He was especially fond of tending to their prized cow, Frau Holle's gift to them many years ago.

Every morning, Hans would feed and milk Frau Holle with care. But one day, while out gathering firewood, he stumbled upon a curious object buried beneath the branches – an old, worn wooden shoe. Intrigued, Hans picked it up and placed it beside the farmhouse door, thinking perhaps his mother might know what to do with it.

Frau Müller, their village neighbor, happened by and noticed the shoe. She exclaimed that this must be one of Frau Holle's own shoes, left behind after a visit many years ago! Legend had it that whoever found Frau Holle's shoe would be granted good fortune for a year.

As luck would have it, Hans's father suddenly fell ill with a fever. The doctor came and went, but no cure seemed to work. Desperate, the villagers turned to the old tales of Frau Holle's magic. They remembered that finding one of her shoes could bring a measure of good fortune. With new hope, they sent word to Frau Müller about the shoe Hans had discovered.

Frau Müller arrived with an elderly woman, who claimed to have knowledge of the ancient ways. Together, they placed the wooden shoe in Hans's bedchamber, believing this would channel Frau Holle's blessing upon him and his family. As they did so, a gentle breeze blew through the village, carrying the sweet scent of fresh hay.

Days passed, and Hans noticed that their farm began to flourish. The crops grew strong and green, and even Frau Holle seemed particularly lively. But alas! Not everyone was as fortunate. A severe storm rolled in, threatening to destroy their home and fields.

Hans's quick thinking saved the day – he remembered a wise saying from his village elder: "Frau Holle's gifts must be shared with others." As the villagers gathered to help rebuild, Hans realized that Frau Holle's luck was not just for his family but for all in need.
